  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">DOMINICAN REPUBLIC</span><span class="style13"></span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official name: </span><span class="style13">Rep├║blica Dominicana (The Dominican Republic)</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, OAS, CARICOM</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">48443 km2 (18704 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">7635000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Santo Domingo 2200000 (including suburbs; 1989 est)</span><span class="style42">Other major city: </span><span class="style13">Santiago de los Caballeros 467000 (including suburbs; 1989 est)</span><span class="style42">Language: </span><span class="style13">Spanish (official)</span><span class="style42">Religion: </span><span class="style13">Roman Catholic (over 90%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">The President and the National Congress ΓÇô a 30-member Senate and a 120-member Chamber of Deputies ΓÇô are elected for four years by universal adult suffrage. The President appoints a Cabinet.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The republic is the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola. The fertile Cibao Valley in the north is an important agricultural region. Most of the rest of the country is mountainous, rising to Pico Duarte ΓÇô at 3175 m (10417 ft). </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The climate is largely subtropical, but it is cooler in the mountains. Rainfall is heavy, but the west and southwest are arid. Hurricanes are a hazard.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">Sugar is the traditional mainstay of the economy, but nickel and iron ore have become the principal exports. Tourism is now the greatest foreign-currency earner. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Peso oro.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">The island of Hispaniola was discovered in 1492 by Columbus. In 1697 Spain ceded the west of the island (Haiti) to France, and from 1795 the whole island was French. Returned to Spanish rule in 1809, the east declared independence as the Dominican Republic in 1821, but was annexed by Haiti (1822ΓÇô44). The 19th century witnessed a succession of tyrants, and by 1900 the republic was bankrupt and in chaos. The USA intervened (1916ΓÇô24). Rafael Trujillo (1891ΓÇô1961) became president in 1930 and ruthlessly suppressed opposition. He was assassinated in 1961. Civil war in 1965 ended after intervention by US and Latin American troops. Since then, an infant democracy has faced grave economic problems.</span></text>
